Snorkeling in Khao Lak: Similan Islands, Surin Islands & Local Reefs

Khao Lak is one of the best bases in Thailand for snorkeling, sitting within easy reach of two marine national parks — the Similan Islands and the Surin Islands — as well as quieter reefs close to shore. Each option has a different character, and the right one for you depends on how much time you have, how far you want to travel, and what you most want to see underwater.

Below is a quick guide to each destination, including who it suits best, what marine life to expect, and direct links to book. If you’re not sure where to start, jump to the comparison table and FAQ further down the page.

Similan Islands Snorkeling

The Similan Islands National Park is the headline act of Andaman Sea snorkeling — granite boulder islands rising out of impossibly clear, turquoise water with visibility regularly reaching 20–30 metres in peak season. Snorkelers swim over healthy coral gardens and around massive submerged boulders, with sightings ranging from reef fish, parrotfish and clownfish to turtles and blacktip reef sharks Our snorkeling trips run from 15 Oct to 15 May and are designed for relaxed, all-ability snorkeling.

Surin Islands Snorkeling

The Surin Islands sit further north along the Andaman coast and offer a noticeably quieter, more remote alternative to the Similans. The reefs here are shallower, making them especially good for relaxed snorkeling close to the surface, with vibrant hard coral gardens and a different mix of marine life including anemone reefs and reef fish in dense schools. A Surin trip is also a chance to learn about the Moken “sea gypsy” community, who have lived among these islands for generations.

Local Snorkeling — Khao Lak

If you’re short on time, traveling with non-divers, or simply want a half-day in the water without the longer boat ride out to the national parks, our local Khao Lak snorkeling spots are a great option. These nearshore reefs are just a short 20 minute boat ride away, making them ideal for young children, and anyone joining as a non-diving companion on a local diving trip. While the marine life is less dramatic than the Similans or Surins, it’s a relaxed and affordable way to get in the water and see Thailand’s reefs first-hand.

How to choose

  • This is your only day in Thailand and you want the classic experience? — choose the Similan Islands. It’s the most famous snorkeling destination on this coast for good reason.
  • Already snorkeled the Similans, or prefer a quieter day with fewer boats? — choose the Surin Islands with it’s shallow healthy reefs and fewer crowds.
  • Traveling with young kids, or only have half a day? — choose local Khao Lak snorkeling, or join family members on a local dive trip as a snorkeler.
