Day Trip to the Similan Islands or Richeleiu Rock
The Similan Islands National Park includes more than just the Similan Islands.
It includes both Koh Bon, which is well known for Manta sightings, and Koh Tachai too.
Koh Tachai is known for it’s underwater pinnacle that is teeming with life, and is a good place to spot large schools and occasional sightings of the big stuff like Mantas and Whalesharks.
Just north of the Similan National Park is the Surin Islands national park, which includes Richelieu Rock.
Daytrip Options
Richeleiu Speedboat
We have partnered with a great speedboat company going to Richeleiu Rock.
They leave Ban Nam Khem in the north around 8am, take approximately 1 hour 20 minutes to get to Richeleiu Rock. You have 2 dives, with lunch on the boat in between and then 1 hour 20 minutes steaming back.
Richeleiu Rock is a highlight that you shouldn’t miss. It’s not for absolute beginners, so if you have only just qualified, you’ll need a few dives on other sites before tackling this.
Similans Speed Boat to Platform Boat
We have also partnered with a company running a speed boats to a platform boat which stays out on the the dive sites. They leave the pier at Tap Lamu at around 8 am.
They take around 1 hour 20 minutes to reach the dive-site. The diving is done from the platform boat, giving a nice big stable base to set up your equipment and easy access into and out of the water.
They give you 2 dives with lunch in between, and then return home.
They are usually back to the pier by 4.30 pm.
Shorter Days, mean more time in your hotel
Both day trip options are good news if you’ve left family or friends on the beach while you go out for the day, and they are a great move if you’re at an ‘all-inclusive’ resort!
They can be a bit a bumpy so they’re not suitable for people with significant back problems. However, they’re also quite exciting, and very efficient in terms of travel time.
Platform Boats
Platform boats are the perfect combination of speed boats and big boats. You travel out to the Similan Islands on a speedboat. Then, when you get there you transfer to a big stable platform boat, which stays out on the Similans all season.
These platform boats give you the option to stay overnight, and also mean that flexible liveaboards are possible. We use platform boats for our Advanced Open Water Course with liveaboard.
The overnight stays on platform boats are particularly good value – the cost for an overnight stay with 6 dives is almost the same as 2 x day trips with 4 dives. Some of the platform boats also go to the Surin Islands, and these are our choice for the Open Water Course with liveaboard.
Out on the Similan Islands the speedboat usually looks after snorkelers while the divers jump from the platform.
It’s a great option for:
- people who are less confident about climbing the ladder on a speedboat
- groups that also include a non-diver or snorkeler
- people who want either an overnight stay or a flexible liveaboard
Where we go
All day trips are 2 dives. Depending on the day and boat this may be 2 dives at the same location or 2 dives on different islands.
